How Franchise Ownership Helped RJ Hogan Achieve Work-Life Balance and Family Freedom

“You work like you own the place, but you don’t. Maybe we should find something you can own.”

Those words from his wife changed the trajectory of RJ Hogan’s life.

After 23 years in the home automation industry, RJ had built a successful career managing high-end projects in The Hamptons on Long Island, New York. But the long hours, constant pressure, and being on call around the clock came at a cost. Burnout was affecting not only his health, but also his family life.

In January 2024, RJ became a Fibrenew franchise owner. Through franchise ownership, he didn’t just replace a paycheck, he built a business that gave him control of his time, flexibility with his schedule, and the ability to prioritize his family.

Today, he describes the decision as life-changing.

From Corporate Burnout to Business Ownership

RJ started his career as a technician’s helper and worked his way up to project manager, overseeing multiple crews and projects ranging from $20,000 to $3.5 million. Professionally, he was successful. Personally, the demands were relentless.

He was effectively on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Summers, the busiest season, meant no family vacations. Long days left him exhausted, unable to coach his kids’ teams or attend activities consistently. The stress was mental, emotional, and physical.

Like many professionals exploring entrepreneurship, RJ wasn’t simply chasing higher income. He was searching for autonomy and work-life balance.

Through a franchise consultant connected to his wife, Lisa, a CPA who runs her own firm, RJ began evaluating franchise opportunities that could provide both financial stability and lifestyle flexibility.

Why a Home-Based Franchise Business Made Sense

RJ knew exactly what he didn’t want in his next chapter. He didn’t want to manage large crews again. He didn’t want another technology-heavy role. And he didn’t want the overhead of a warehouse or office space.

What attracted him to Fibrenew was the owner-operator model.

As a mobile, home-based franchise business specializing in leather, plastic, and vinyl restoration, Fibrenew allowed RJ to operate independently, set his own schedule, and avoid managing a large staff. The business runs from a vehicle and home office, keeping overhead lean while maintaining strong profit potential.

Living on Long Island, he immediately recognized an opportunity in the marine market.

Growing up around boats, RJ understood how much wear and tear marine cushions endure, and how expensive they are to replace. Restoration offered a cost-effective solution for boat owners. Marine vinyl is also used extensively in patio furniture, outdoor cushions, sporting goods, and commercial seating, creating diversified demand.

For RJ, the franchise opportunity aligned with both local market needs and his personal goals.

Overcoming the Fear of Leaving a Paycheck

Transitioning from employment to franchise ownership can feel intimidating, even for experienced professionals.

RJ admits the leap was “terrifying.” He was walking away from a consistent, significant income to generate his own. The uncertainty is something many aspiring franchise owners face.

However, validation calls with existing franchisees reassured him that success in franchising is closely tied to effort and execution. The message was clear: you get out of it what you put into it.

Comprehensive training at Fibrenew’s headquarters in Calgary further strengthened his confidence. He received hands-on instruction in restoration techniques along with marketing systems, sales processes, and operational best practices.

Equally important was the ongoing franchise support system. Corporate leadership, peer franchisees, shared knowledge platforms, and monthly training sessions created a collaborative network. For a first-time business owner, that structure reduced risk and accelerated learning.

Launching and Growing a Service-Based Franchise

RJ strategically launched his business during the off-season, allowing him to focus on relationship-building rather than immediate sales pressure. Marina operators had time to meet, learn about his services, and refer customers within the close-knit boating community.

Word-of-mouth marketing quickly generated repeat business.

From there, he expanded into restaurants, medical practices, auto dealerships, manufacturing clients, and residential furniture restoration. The diversity of service applications helped stabilize revenue across multiple industries.

One memorable project involved restoring a vintage Eames chair for a retired architect. The chair held deep sentimental value as the first significant piece of furniture the client had purchased early in his career. After restoration, the chair moved from storage back into the living room.

Experiences like that reinforce the meaningful aspect of service-based franchise ownership, solving problems while preserving items people value.

Building a Scalable Business Without Sacrificing Lifestyle

RJ’s long-term plan includes hiring a part-time technician and eventually expanding to multiple service vehicles. Like many owner-operators, his vision includes scaling the business while maintaining control over his schedule.

But the most significant return on investment hasn’t just been financial.

Franchise ownership has allowed him to be present. He now gets his children on the bus each morning. He coaches his son’s basketball team. He attends his daughter’s dance recitals. He closes his business for a week in July to take family vacations, something that was impossible in his previous career.

When the New York Knicks made the NBA Cup finals in Las Vegas, RJ and his son booked flights and attended the game together. Spontaneous moments like that were once unthinkable.

This is the practical side of being your own boss: control over your calendar and the ability to prioritize what matters.

The Real Value of Franchise Ownership

For RJ Hogan, franchise ownership delivered more than a career change. It provided a path to work-life balance, personal fulfillment, and business independence.

He replaced burnout with autonomy.
He replaced constant stress with structured support.
He replaced missed family moments with meaningful presence.

For professionals considering entrepreneurship, his journey illustrates what an owner-operator franchise can offer: a scalable business model, comprehensive training and support, manageable overhead, and the opportunity to design a life around family instead of the other way around.
