Once you sit down, put your feet up and recline in an Ekornes Stressless Chair and Ottoman, you understand the ‘stressless’ part. However, these wonderfully designed Danish chairs usually come with a not so stressless price tag. Most furniture stores selling upper end leather furniture also sell cleaning and conditioning products for leather – so be sure and purchase a leather care kit and use it regularly. We typically find the headrest and chair arms seem to loose their vitality first. This is especially true if the leather furniture is predominantly used by a male. Apparently men excrete a much higher amount of scalp and body oils than women. The build up of these oils will eventually break down the protectant top coat, causing color loss and cracking of the leather. This was the case in a recent leather chair and ottoman restoration on an expensive Ekornes set. The chair was still quite comfortable and the majority of leather still in good condition. The headrest, however, had a worn place with a hole in the center due to oil buildup. We replaced the headrest panel with new leather, then refurbished and re-dyed the entire set to like new condition. We also suggested that the owner have us make a matching leather headrest protector. And once again, for only a fraction of replacement cost, this beautiful and functional leather furniture set could sit front row and center in the family room.
