A customer wrote in with a question about leather cleaning:
Hi Sam,
I wanted to let you know how nice the furniture looks. You did a great job. It looks totally different than the marked up, different colored sections that were there before I left. I like the more even color look better, and I’m so glad that you were able to have the two cushions that looked so different blend in with the whole sofa. It looks like a new set.
What do you recommend for normal cleaning – not the 6 month kind of deep cleaning with the products you left? When you wipe the pieces down for dusting, do you recommend rubbing them with any kind of product?
Thanks again,
Donna
Answer
For everyday leather cleaning you should just use a water damped soft cloth. If you spill something on it wipe it up immediately with a damp cloth first. If the top coat is undisturbed, then you may use a dab of conditioner to re-protect it. * Alcohol /strong remover products will damage the finish immediately. Common household cleaners should never be used as this speeds up the dissipation of the top coat, though it is unseen over a period of time. Ask your house keep what they are wiping with!
For regular maintenance every 3-6 months you should use a professional grade cleaner & separate conditioner. Apply with a soft cloth. We sell them and so does your furniture store. Stay away from leather wipes and baby wipes.
Lastly and most importantly
Once a year have a “leather expert” not the carpet guys, come and do a Deep Cleaning and yearly evaluation. The evaluation is to help identify any trouble spots of possible top coat failure. If none are found the Conditioner is then applied liberally. If some failure is found a quick restore can happen thee same day, the same service call for a discounted rate. If a separate service call is later performed the standard rate applies. The leather is then restored/ repaired as and where needed. Think of it as a yearly tune up for your leather to prevent a premature face lift/ restore for your leather – that time comes soon enough( on average 4-6 years depending on the maintenance and manufacturer. Why not do what you can to slow it down!
